Reacting to:Media imperialism

I'm exaggerating for effect, but it drives me completely f"£king mad how many concepts have been virtually erased from popular discourse even though they're right there in front of me.  For example, I can't believe some of the stuff I've been grappling towards for years on this blog has been extensively theorised before and I didn't know until just now.  It feels like when I read Lenin on imperialism for the first time or any number of other works before the triumph of the memory warp that is neoliberalism.

ARGH.

Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong overdue.  If you can't get bail within two years, there's a problem in the justice system.  As the judge reportedly pointed out.

Published apology in the Daily Star.  Those of us who have national allegiances could take notes on this:

We reject the Pakistani state and army's claim that these atrocities were committed in our name.

The Future of Sri Lanka: A Discussion on the Diaspora and Political Engagement in the Post-War Era

Point 1:

Even as the end of the war has brought a new flood of refugees in the north in recent days, the United Nations, the International Red Cross and other groups have said that the military’s restrictions have curtailed their activities and are endangering the lives of a refugee population now estimated at 280,000.

Point 2:

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had this to say about US policy in Pakistan for the past few decades:

Amnesty:

Call on the Sri Lankan government to release J.S. Tissainayagam immediately and unconditionally.

John Authers, investment editor for the Financial Time, wrote:

"True surprises for markets are rare. Monday’s rise of 17 per cent in India’s benchmark Sensex stock index was an exception. It is plain that the market is very happy that the ruling Congress party won a smashing victory in parliamentary elections, which should now give it much greater freedom of political manoeuvre."

According to the Army, he was shot dead while trying to escape.

A close friend and erstwhile Roti Passer asked me why we have so little coverage of the Indian elections so far.  On some further thought, my response is:

1) We do have some;

2) I am quite proud that we have far more coverage on the war/conflict/genocide/dramatic changes in the situation in Sri Lanka and to some extent SWAT thanks to ks;

Now we know the civilian death toll in Sri lanka since Jan 2009 of over 7000 dead is bigger than wars this year in Iraq, Pakistan, Gaza and Afghanistan combined.  Will Pakistan outperform this feat?

According to Sri Lanka's Human Rights minister Mahinda Samarasinghe in a live press statement

Two-part video of Arundhati Roy’s closing keynote at the Women’s Action Forum organized an evening of resistance at Karachi Press Club, on 8th May 2009.

Main points

1. Never Surrender our complications (Edit: in the main body...important to listen to whole speech...I did over simplify!...She said, do not oversimply what is complicated or make complicated what is simple).

2. Never pick and choose injustices

3. Never make that choice of either you are with us or with the terrorists

SL Government doctors in the war zone have confirmed this.  People on Al Jazeera look grave and concerned.  They must know something we don't know.  It really sounds serious.

I am just putting the info for relatives for what it is worth....I don't know.

Area was quoted by Milliband as being smaller than central park to give people an idea.  With thousands of people trapped inside.
