Wiki Tidbits

By: Desi Italiana on 29 Jul 2007

I love Wikipedia. For someone like me who feasts on morsels of information on a wide variety of topics, Wikipedia is a godsend. Some of the articles are very informative, and you can basically find information on anything you want, however random. One of the best things is that it's open source- meaning, people get to dish out, collaborate, and discuss the contents of the subject at hand. Of course, the pitfall of this is that you have to be very cautious and guarded- you never know who's editing, inserting, and omitting things and how the presentation of a topic is being shaped.

And there are some hilarious boo boos, dubious assertions, and incredulous tidbits that I find on Wikipedia. Some make you smile and wonder who on earth wrote this; other lines are seriously questionable. It's clear that Wikipedia is often a turf where battling interests, ideas, and animosities duke it out.

Some things I have gleaned:

On the Punjabi Mafia:

Punjabi mafia has strong links with Latin Kings due to their trade in Mexico and S. America, yet no one is every arrested or put to trial. Cucumbus Bray and Justin Johal were the first to rape five-hundred Hindus.

PM families are becoming very powerful in Vancouver, Seattle, East-Coast, and Northern California now with so many Punjabis that own businesses and got a lot of money mainly the Jatt Punjabi's.

On Arun Gawli, Bombay gangster and politician:

While in jail, reading the Bhagwad Puran and Swami Vivekananda had a profound influence on his character, thus prompting him to renounce his criminal past. Daddy [Gawli] realized that he would never realize his spiritual goal while leading a life of crime, and hence relinquished his past forever. He now spends his days helping the poor and underpriveled taking up their cause in a non-violent Gandhian way. Anybody in need that goes to him never returns empty handed. Arun Daddy is a true champion of the poor.

On Chotta Rajan, Bombay don:

Dawood's aide Chotta Shakeel then led the hit. Posing as pizza delivery men they gunned down trusted Rajan Hitman Rohit Varma and his wife. However their aim of killing Rajan failed as he made a daring escape along Bangkok's rooftops.

He then recovered in hospital and slipped away to evade capture.

Rajan Strikes Back [title of article]

On Khaleej Times, publication based in Dubai:

Their writers have a cheesy way of inserting phrases such as "favourite No. 1 newspaper" and variations of the same within random articles, as seen in almost any article, written by their own writers, within their newspaper and website.

Have you come across any Wiki tidbits such as the ones above?

You are blowing my mind here. You mean Chotta Rajan DIDN'T make a daring escape across Bangkok rooftops? That's very disappointing.

No, Chotta Rajan DID "make a daring escape" and I am sure that his lieutenants were very happy and joyous.

It's not the inaccuracy of the article, it's the narration. The entry reads like a thriller novel- "Rajan Strikes Back." I personally think it's kind of cute; it made me smile when I read that bit.

Ditto for Arun "Daddy" who is a "true champion of the poor" and the Khaleej Times' writers who have "cheesy" ways.
